Título: Nutraceuticals: a circular economy approach
Resumen: I will explore how the growing field of nutraceuticals can align with the principles of the circular economy, transforming the way we produce, consume and manage resources. Nutraceuticals, which include food products with health benefits beyond basic nutrition, offer a unique opportunity to integrate sustainability into the food and health sectors. First, I will discuss the key concepts of the circular economy, focusing on minimizing waste, optimizing resource use, and encouraging product life extension. I will then connect these principles to the nutraceutical industry, illustrating how byproducts of food production-such as peels, seeds, and other wastes-can be reused to create high-value nutraceutical ingredients. This not only reduces waste, but also creates new revenue streams and contributes to environmental sustainability. We will also examine innovative technologies and practices that can help nutraceutical companies implement circular models, including biotechnological advances, environmentally friendly extraction methods, and the use of renewable energy. Finally, the economic and social benefits of this approach, such as job creation, reduced environmental footprint and improved public health, will be discussed. The goal is to highlight how adopting a circular economy mindset in the nutraceutical industry can lead to a more sustainable and resilient future, with both environmental and economic benefits.
