Se invita a los Docentes, Investigadores y Alumnos de la comunidad de Farmacia y Bioquímica al Seminario del Departamento de Ciencias Química el próximo jueves 10 de octubre, a las 13 hs en el aula 101 (Biología) primer piso.
The alcohol hangover is defined as the combination of mental and physical symptoms experienced the day after a single episode of heavy drinking, starting when the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero. This presentation will discuss the growing body of evidence showing that cognitive functioning and mood are functioning and mood are negatively affected in the hangover state, which may result in impaired daily activities such as job performance, riding a bicycle, or driving a car. New research on alcohol consumption and hangovers during the COVID-19 pandemic is also highlighted. Further, it will discuss what is currently known about the pathology of alcohol hangover, including the role of alcohol metabolism, the immune system, and factors affecting hangover severity such as genetics, personality, food intake and the microbiome, and congeners. Finally, the need for an effective hangover treatment is discussed and data is presented on the efficacy and safety of currently available hangover treatments.
Joris C Verster (1970) studied psychology at Utrecht University and in 2002 he obtained his PhD. Verster is Associate Professor at the Division of Pharmacology at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, and Adjunct Professor of Human Psychopharmacology at the Centre for Human Psychopharmacology of Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Verster investigates the impact of exposome pressure (e.g., lifestyle factors) on health, immune fitness and behavior. Aim of this multidisciplinary research is to develop and implement tools and methods (biomarkers, clinical assessments, questionnaires), and to collect Real World Evidence on how a wide range of environmental factors may impact health outcomes and quality of life. He conducts research into the effects of alcohol use as a risk factor in health and disease, and the causes, consequences, and treatment of alcohol hangover, and is founder of the Alcohol Hangover Research Group. Verster is (co)-author of 268 articles; book chapters, 409 oral / poster presentations, and editor of 6 books. Verster is included on the Elsevier/Stanford University listing of top 2% most influential researchers across all science disciplines (career long citation impact); with high field impact in Clinical Medicine. The impact of Verster’s research is reflected by regular media coverage, invited lectures, and appointments as scientific advisor for industry, academia, and governmental organizations.
Desde ya, esperamos contar con su valiosa presencia.
